So that they can molt in peace. Their life consists of eating "normal food", sleeping, crawling, burrowing, molting, eating "old dead skin", eating "normal food", sleeping, crawling, burrowing, molting, eating "old dead skin".....repeat over & over & over.

If their human adds a saltwater aquarium, then they will lay eggs somewhere in that sequence.

Otherwise it remains the same life cycle.

Soft shell crabs take shelter during these vulnerable moulting stages. In areas where there are no or few natural shelters for these crabs, particularly on sediment shores and in estuaries. These shelters may consist of roofing tiles, field drains, or car tyres placed onto the shore.

Usually, Hermie's will hide if they need alone time, or if they bury themselves it means they may be molting. First of all, don't freak out. Molting is a natural thing for Hermie's. it's when the exoskeleton on their body gets too small and falls off. they will need to be away from other crabs and in an incubation tank. Don't worry, some Hermie's actually do this once or twice a year.

The population density of sand crabs in that section of the beach is 3 sand crabs per square meter. Therefore, 45 sand crabs / 15 square meters = 3 sand crabs per square meter.
