Often because they do not want those people who they care about to see the state that they are in. They don't want those close to them to see that they have lost everything - their health, their money, jobs, friends, etc.
Crack is a horrible drug - nearly as bad as heroin - and it just consumes your life. Every day is spent trying to find a graft (illegal job for money). Once you have found one, you then have to find someone who is still selling it. Then you have to go and wait around for the dealer to drop the stuff off. Then you might realise you don't have the materials for smoking it, and so you end up having to beg for a few coins to buy them. Eventually you manage to get home and have some.
Now you feel on top of the world - like you are God - but the high is so short lived that you then want more. The come down (return to normal) is depressing and not nice at all. You need to go and get more crack to get high again. So the cycle repeats itself.
Being a crack addict is a full time job. It often involves 18 hour days and the only holidays you get are when you are in jail.
If you know someone who is on it, you need to get them to a rehabilitation centre. The only thing that can prevent relapsing back into crack use, is a change of scenery for that person - together with the love and support of their family. Believe me when I tell you that people do recover - and it is really bad to stick labels on people. A person is an individual. They can change and many people do get their lives back on track!
