The short answer is two fold. The main reason dogs CHEW on sticks is the mouth feel and the tooth feel. The reason why they chase and carry the stick is triggered by their prey drive. Prey dive is the dogs instinct to chase moving objects in order to catch their meals in nature.
Dogs eat sticks for multiple reasons.. The first is simply that dogs love oral stimulus. Chewing feels good to them. Second is that it is actually hygienic for the dogs. It dulls and shortens their teeth as well as cleans their gum linings.

They are easy for the dog to pick up. However, if you were asking this question for your dog, I VERY HIGHLY recommend you never ever let your dog pick up sticks, as in twigs and branches. This will give your dog splinters inside their gums and cause them serious pain. There have also been reports of dogs running with branches etc. and resulting in the branch being lodged inside them and unfortunately having to be put down. So please never let your dog pick them up. :D
i am a proud owner of 15 dog and many more that have either passed away ar had to go to sleep
anyways it is not easy to train them but you must throw sticks at them but do not hit them cuz then you are ugly
the next step you will need 2 people to do this first get a partner then find a stick but go into a forest and hold your partners hand
then one person must throw the stick and then the other person must catch it in their mouth in front of a dog
do this until you one day try to do it with a dog and if it does not catch it do it again until it works
but you must and i mean must and i quote start off with a small stick
then you will have your very own stick catching dog
good luck
Because they are tasty to dogs but they can bleed if they eat one
