What are word equations in chemistry?

When a chemical reaction occurs, it can be described by an equation. This shows the chemicals that react (called the reactants) on the left-hand side, and the chemicals that they produce (called the products) on the right-hand side. The chemicals can be represented by their names or by their chemical symbols.Unlike mathematical equations, the two sides are separated by an arrow, that indicates that the reactants form the products and not the other way round.

How is a chemical equation defined?

When a chemical reaction occurs, it can be described by an equation. This shows the chemicals that react (called the reactants) on the left-hand side, and the chemicals that they produce (called the products) on the right-hand side. The chemicals can be represented by their names or by their chemical symbols. Unlike mathematical equations, the two sides are separated by an arrow, that indicates that the reactants form the products and not the other way round. Any chemical change in substance whether combination, decomposition, displacement or arrangement of the molecules of the substance which involves the transformation of matter into a new substance is termed as chemical equation.

What is the chemical change when sugar is heated?

Sugar is a carbohydrate, its molecule consisting of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The most common sugar molecules have the formula C6H12O6, meaning 6 atoms of carbon, 12 of hydrogen, and 6 of oxygen. When completely burned, the 12 hydrogen atoms and 6 oxygen atoms combine into 6 molecules of H2O (water) leaving only the 6 carbon atoms behind. Other sugars, with slightly different formulae, react to heat in a similar fashion.
