Why do fish have to live in water?

Every living thing on earth needs oxygen to be able to live. In the case of fish, they extract oxygen that is dissolved in the water by using their gills which are the equivalent of our lungs.

don't ever get a water plant for your fish tank it's covered in many creepy crawleys and they attack your fish and kill them. I've discovered this many times.

Without water, their gills will dry and prevent the fish from absorbing oxygen - so it will suffocate.
