Because terrestrial planets - those made of rocks - could never become so large. The gravitation pressure on a "massive" rock planet would be so great that it would rupture and break apart.

Gas does not have this problem, so they can grow to much larger sizes.

Also, the is more "gas" than "rock" in the Universe, so there are more building material for large gas giants.

Centrifical force, the gas giants spin so quickly that the atmopshere around the equator gets pushed outwards just a bit.
