A:People put horseshoes on horses because most horses are kept in stalls, and in stalls, a horse stands in ammonia from its waste, and this weakens the hooves, so people put horseshoes on their feet as a quick solution so that they dont shatter on roads or other hard ground. However, what many people don't know is that it is actually better for the horse if you do not shoe him. Horses should be left in a pasture and kept barefoot. They can be gradually introduced to hard surfaces and their feet will grow harder like the mustangs. Shoes restrict blood flow through the legs, send harmful vibrations up to the joints and several other things that sacrifices the horses health.

∙ 14y agoHorseshoes are applied hot so that they stay on the horses hoof when the shoe cools to room temperature and when the shoe turns cold in winter. By the way, horses do not need to wear shoes. Read "The Soul of a Horse" for more info.

shoeing the horse
- it has to be hot so the farrier can make it the right shape
- it doesn't hurt the horse
- if it a cold horse shoe- they wont be able to get the right shape
branding the horse
- people brand wild horse so they can spot the easily because some are very shy

∙ 13y agowell in the wild a horses hoof wall would be worn down a little naturaly by running ect however when a horse is kept domesticated it will be doing a lot more work and so its hooves will be worn down more than is natural so by shoeing them it protects the hoof wall from being worn down too much!

∙ 12y agoHot fitting a horse shoe leaves a mark that lets the farrier know if the shoe is an exact fit. It also means the shoe is more pliable and easier to shape if it's not an exact fit.

How do you know if a horse needs shoes?
Horses that are used for work or recreation on hard surfaces require horseshoes to preserve the hoof. Wild horses would not have needed a harder hoof since they spent most of their time feeding and roaming grassy, soft areas. Their hooves wore down at the correct rate for their needs. Once horses were domesticated, they spent more time on roads, in towns, etc. Hooves now wore down too quickly, and were damaged. A metal horseshoe, uniquely fitted to the animal, gives the horse stability and protection from these new elements that nature did not design their hooves for. Not all domestic horses have horse shoes. Some owners let them go "bare feet". But if the bare feet horses go on rides they need boots, for their hooves. Most bare foot horses are just companion horses not riding ones. However, horses are fine being barefoot as long as they are being ridden mostly on dirt or sand. As long as the hooves are in good shape (not too long, not too short, not cracked, and of the right angle), it does not bother a horse to walk barefoot. In fact, shoeing a horse when not necessary can compromise blood circulation in the foot, causing lameness. Keeping them barefoot creates better circulation, important to keeping their feet and hooves healthy. On average, a horse's hooves should be trimmed by a farrier every 6-8 weeks (or, if shod, their shoes should be replaced about that often). The horse should wear shoes if it is ridden a lot or if it is often ridden on pavement or gravel. This prevents their hooves from wearing down faster than they can grow, and protects them from these hard surfaces. Also, some horses need special shoes if they have leg or foot problems. And yet, wild horses do not live on lush green soft pastures, nor dirt pastures, nor any other soft surface. They run on rocks that could be used as a rasp. That is how their feet are gradually trimmed as they need it. The truth is that in the wild, horses hooves are just as hard as the ground they travel on. The frog develops calluses and becomes tough against the rock too. Barefoot horses are way better off for many reasons, the main one being hooves flex with every step. This helps pump blood through the legs, and horseshoes prevent that, so it actually shortens your horses lifespan. So in reality, there are various reasons that each horse owner has for their horses to have shoes and not have horse shoes. To each his own.
WhY DO HORSES HAVE PAWS INSTEAD OF HOOVES?
If they had paws it would be hard for them to balance where as they have hoove they can balance alot easier .. also you cant put shoes on paws

There is a commercial product that you can 'paint' onto the bottom of the hooves that act as a protective layer between the hooves and the ground. I have never used this so I can't say first hand how well it works. There is also the option to put Easyboots on. These I have used and as long as you get the right size for your horse these make a good alternative to horseshoes in an emergency or for occational use. The downside of Easyboots is the price. They can be pricey X 4. Around $30 to $40 per boot.
