Ice "melts" in two different ways. We are all familiar with the solid to water phase, which absorbs a lot of heat and is responsible for cooling our drinks.

The other way is called "sublimation." When ice is kept below freezing but exposed to air with extremely low humidity, as in a frost-free refrigerator, water molecules escape from the surface to the surrounding air because the water vapor pressure at the surface is higher than vapor pressure of the air itself. Over time, this results in shrinkage of the cubes. It is the same process that keeps the freezer frost-free, similar to evaporation but occurring at much lower temperatures.

Ice cubes shrink when left in the freezer for a long time because of the process of sublimation. This is occurs when a solid mass changes directly into gas. This occurrence is not at all unusual for there are substances and conditions that make this happen.

Ice cubes are affected by the freezer's anti-frost mechanism, which eliminates the need to defrost. This mechanism also 'defrosts' ice cubes.

It evaporates. This is called sublimation, when a solid evaporates directly to vapor without passing through the liquid phase.

How much clearance is required for commercial refrigerators?

Commercial refrigerators come in all shapes and sizes, from undercounter models that are smaller than household fridges to walk-in refrigerators that are actual rooms. However, "standard" commercial refrigerators are often about the size of residential refrigerators - they just don't have the freezer compartment.

What type of configuration of fridge freezers is most popular?

Side-by-side refrigerators, with their large freezer capacity and convenient configuration, are the most popular refrigerator models. They are also the least energy efficient models. Most manufacturers offer a through-the-door ice maker /water dispenser as an option on all side-by-side. Top -freezer refrigerators are the next most popular model. These tend to offer smaller freezer compartments than side-by-sides and the freezer is at eye level.

Why do ice cubes in freezer lose their shape and become distorted?

Today's refrigerators use a cold air system to make the refrigerator section cold. In olden days there would be an evaporator in both the freezer section (which the whole freezer compartment actually was) and an evaporator in the refrigerator section. Today's units use one evaporator with a fan in front of it to blow cold air throughout the freezer and into an air vent leading to the refrigerator section. This blowing of cold, really near zero degree , air across the ice cube trays or ice maker bin the result of this is-- if you don't use ice the cubes keep getting smaller due to evaporation,. Usually this takes about 30 days in which the cubes become stale and begin to take on odors of the food that surrounds them. For a cube to be good use them or throw them out after a month because a guest may love onions but not the taste of them in her Johnny Red Rocks.

What are two disadvantages small refrigerators have over their full size counterparts?

Smaller refrigerators fit into smaller spaces and are a lot cheaper to purchase than their larger, full size counterparts. These days, with houses becoming smaller it is easier to find space for smaller furniture and appliances.

What are some advantages to choosing a side by side fridge?

Because of the two smaller doors, these refrigerators are great for small kitchens. Also, they give you the chance to place often used items that need to be frozen at a more comfortable level.
