A whale floats because of this type of fat called blubber. Blubber is basically the solid form of oil. For example : If you drop oil in water, then the oil will float. So since the whale has oil inside the body, the whale floats. Blubber, which is oil, is really thick in big mammals. The thickness is about 1 ft or more. Blubber makes whales float in water. :)

The upthrust from the water helps the whale maintain buoyancy, helping it stay afloat. Don't understand ? Imagine you are floating on your back in a pool of water. You are the whale. Now imagine someone comes beneath you and pushes you upwards. That way, you float. When on land, there is no upthrust, so the whales organs, like lungs and heart, are crushed by its fat and blubber, that gives it it's tremendous weight.

If you mean: 'how do whales manage to dive deep', the answer is: 1) they have the muscle power for the act of diving itself and 2) their body allows them to dive deep by the way the body of a sea mammal like the whale is constructed. The body has reinforced airways, which allows the lungs to collapse. Plus it has sinuses that are designed to withstand the very great pressure that you experience during a deep dive, the middle ear is well-protected against the pressure of deep diving and whales don't have the frontal cranial sinuses that land mammals have and that might otherwise give them blinding headaches after a deep dive.
