It is very common for the knee to make funny noises as it moves. If there is no pain associated with it, it is nothing to worry about. It is usually caused either by

1) Gas bubbles popping (like bubble wrap)

2) Ligaments/tendons getting stretched and snapping back into place.

The theory that it makes you more prone to Arthritis is just a myth.

The knee will pop if there is a trace amount of gas in the joint. However, if the joint continues to pop every time during a specific movement, then it risks injury over time. The popping is indicative of not enough muscle mass, or something is wrong with the joint itself.

Why do my joints click and crack? The painless noise in your joints or ligaments is both common and quite normal as called Crepitus. The synovial fluid lubricates and protects the joints. Over time, gases can build up in these areas which are released when the joint is being used. Thus, the pops and cracks. It can also be from tendons and ligaments sliding over bone. Joints pop because of the releasing of gas out of a pocket of liquid in your joints. This isn't harmful, unless you are forcing the joints to pop.
