Contrary to popular belief, koalas are quite quick once they are on the move. They can move at a good speed for short distances along the ground, although not quickly enough to evade dogs. There is no information available on the speed a koala can actually run.

They have also been observed running reasonably quickly along the road, almost too fast for well-meaning humans to catch up to them and move them out of harm's way.

Koalas can shinny up trees very quickly and efficiently when threatened.

Yes. A slow metabolism is one of the koala's adaptations

Koalas have a slow metabolic rate which is required for them to digest the eucalyptus leaves on which they feed. Eucalyptus leaves are very fibrous and rather low in nutrition, so the fact that the koala has a slow metabolic rate means it can keep the food within its digestive system for as long as possible in order to maximise the energy that can be extracted from the leaves. This slow metabolic rate also means the koalas sleep for more time each day in order to conserve energy.

Koalas do not always move slowly. They can climb trees very quickly, and the limited studies that have been done on koala speed suggest they can reach a speed of 10 km per hour for short bursts.

However, it is true that koalas move slowly for much of their waking time. They have a slow metabolic rate which is required for them to digest the eucalyptus leaves on which they feed. Eucalyptus leaves are very fibrous and rather low in nutrition, so the fact that the koala has a slow metabolic rate means it can keep the food within its digestive system for as long as possible in order to maximise the energy that can be extracted from the leaves. This slow metabolic rate also means the koalas sleep for more time each day in order to conserve energy, and that they often tend to move slowly.

Koalas are very slow, as they spend at least 18 hours a day sleeping. However, they are quick to climb trees, and they can move quite quickly when running along the ground.
