The lungs are where gas exchange takes place. Carbon dioxide from your blood leaves and oxygen enters into the blood. Therefore if the lungs don't have a blood supply there would be no way for a person to get rid of carbon dioxide or acquire oxygen.

The lungs have a large number of blood vessels because this is the location for gas exchange. Gas exchange requires a moist surface and a substrate. The moist surface in animals with lungs is the surface of the lung, and the substrate is the iron-based protein called a heme in the red blood cells. Since this is the binding site for oxygen and carbon dioxide, there needs to be a large volume of blood to pass by the lungs in a short amount of time to make the most efficient use of the respiratory process.
