Because they "feed" off your reactions. they are so uncomfortable in their own minds that they have to do anything, even start fights, to avoid being alone with their thoughts and possible having to accept the reality that they do not matter. if they can upset you, they can focus on how "important" they are instead. your reacting at all assures them that what they say matters.
