In The Bible baptism is something that happens to believers. When somebody truly believes that Jesus is the son of God and He died as a sacrifice for sin then you are a Christian. Then you can be baptised.

Another View:

Baptism by the emerging of oneself in water is a symbolic jesture on the part of the receipient of allowing the 'oldself' and its ways to die (water is the tomb) and arising out of the watery grave as a 'new being' in Christ. Afterwards, the laying on of hands is done for the new disciple to receive the promise of God's Holy Spirit begettin him/her into the Family of God.

Because you want to make a public expression of your faith in the blood of Christ and putting away the old life of sin. It often also represents your decision to join a particular church or denomination.

Another answer

most Christians get baptised because they say it brings the Spirit of God into them and takes all the sin that they have done

It is the testimony to God that you have repented of your sins and have been washed clean by His atonement (1John5:6-8). It is like going into the shower dirty but coming out clean and feeling like a new person (Gal 3:27, Rom 6:1-6, John 3:1-10, 2 Corinthians 5:16-17, Titus 3:5, Isaiah 1:16, Ezekiel 36:22-38 ). It is also a sign that you are accepted as a member of that particular church.

Plan of Salvation

1. Romans 10:17 (Hear the message)

2. Hebrews 11:6 (Believe the message: "the gospel") Mark 16:15-16, 1 Cor.15:1-4

3. Luke 13: 3 (Repent)

4. Romans 10:9 (Confess "Jesus is Lord" Refers to public confession 1 Timothy 6:12)

5. Acts 2:38 (Get Baptized)

1 Peter 3:21

its your baptism that saves you. yes God's grace, and your faith, plus baptism

The Practice of Baptism

Revelation 3:20 alot of people who don't believe in baptism use this scripture

you cannot pray Jesus into your life.

you need to understand the commitment before making it

Romans 10:13 i know people who don't believe in baptism use this scripture as well, this is talking about Israel coming back to God, like someone who was with God but left, it was not talking about the plan of salvation.

Acts 22:16 you are CALLED to be baptized. (Acts 2:38-..as many as our Lord our God will call..")

Colossians 2:12

In your baptism, you are being buried with God and rise because of faith.

1 peter 3:21, Romans 6:1-14

people say that baptism doesn't save you, but by getting baptized you are doing what God wants you to do

Ephesians 2:8

we are saved by God's grace. Formula: your faith + God's grace= salvation

Romans 6:2-4 Remember this scripture, it informs you of what happens when you get baptized.

1 Corinthians 1:17 i know people that use this scripture as well to discredit baptism.

paul explains about different beliefs and divisions that were going on. This scripture does not say that baptism is not important. it just says that that's not Paul's main focus. This scripture gets taken out of context.

Jesus could forgive sins even while he was alive.

Matthew 9: 2-6

"Believer's Baptism" saved as an adult but no faith.

John 3: 5-8

you need to understand the "gospel" when you get baptized

Mark 16:15-16, Acts 2:38, Acts 8:34-37

what do you get from baptism?

1. the forgiveness of your sins (Acts 2:38, Acts 22:16) (Ezekiel 36:22-28-"the promise")

2. the gift of the holy spirit (Acts 2:38) (Ezekiel 36:22-28-"the promise")

1 Timothy 4:16 (watch your life and your doctrine closely)

watch your life: be careful what you do.

watch your doctrine: be careful what you believe

Examples:

Acts 2:36-47 (3 thousand souls), Acts 8:1-12 (Samaritans), Acts 8:13 (Simon the sorcerer), Acts 8:26-40 (Ethiopian eunuch), Acts 9:1-17 , Acts 22;6-16, Romans 6:3 "us"- (Apostle Paul), Acts 10 (Cornelius, relatives, and close friends), Acts 16:14-15 (Lydia and household), Acts 16:35-34 (Phillipian jailer and household), Acts 19:1-5 (12 disciples rebatized correctly), Rom 6:3 (Romans), 1 Corinthians 1;13 (Corinthians), 1 Corinthians 1:14 (Crispus), 1Corinthians 1:14 (Gaius), 1 Corinthians 1:16 (household of Stephanas), Galatians 3:27 (Galatians), Efesians (4:4-6), Colossians 2:11-13 (Colossians), Titus 3:5 (Titus and Paul "us"), 1 Peter 3:21 (Apostle Peter and "pilgrims of the dispensation"-"..now saves us..")

Roman Catholic AnswerA person usually gets baptized because Jesus tells us that we must be baptized. Baptism washes away all sin, original or actual, and makes a person a new creation, a son or daughter of God capable of pleasing God with one's actions and meriting heaven. You can not receive any other sacraments until you have been baptised.

People get baptised as a public profession of faith.

.

Catholic AnswerPeople get baptized because Our Blessed Lord commanded it, and tied salvation to the regeneration of baptism. See St. John 3:5, Acts 2:38, Acts 22:16, 1 Cor 6:11, Titus 3:5; and 1 Peter 3:19-21. Baptism not only washes away original sin, but all actual sin, as well, making us children of God, and making us capable of receiving divine grace to save us. Baptism, in making us children of God actually gives us a participation in the life of the Trinity and confers an indelible spiritual mark. Baptism, however, does not remove concupiscence and we must deal with that our entire lives, through the strength received in the other sacraments, which we are now eligible to receive.

people are often baptised in the christian fith as a way of "getting them in to heaven" it is a cheap way of saying "im not really a christian so im going to have my child baptised just in case". From the view point of the church it is a way of joining- otherwise it is a hall pass to sin as you please- another reason why religion should be abolished.

A New Testament perspective:According to Scripture, the simple, direct answer to the question is, "To be obedient to Jesus."

Matthew 28:19, 20 - "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Mark 16:16 - "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned."

This was Jesus' commandment, and thus the apostles preached.

Acts 2:37-39 - Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."

It can (and will) be rationalized away or argued against ad nauseum by those who don't know or trust in Scripture, but New Testament teaching on the subject is crystal-clear. It's foolish and naive to say one has to be baptized "to get into heaven," but NO ONE who is deliberately disobedient to Jesus will spend eternity with Him.

2 Thessalonians 1:7-10 - and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not OBEY the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.

What are the rules at the Roman Catholic Church when someone is being baptismed?

Roman Catholic AnswerSomeone to be baptized must be unbaptized. If they are an infant, they must have a Catholic parent, Catholic sponsors and a well-founded hope that they will be raised as practicing Catholics. If they are an adult, they must be thoroughly educated in the faith and submit to all of its tenants. The baptism should be done by a priest (except in the danger of imminent death) in a Church using properly blessed water.

What does water symbolise in baptism?

Water is a very rich symbol in baptism, and it represents many things. It represents death in that when you go under the water this is symbolic of a death to your old, sinful self. It represents life in that when you come out of the water, this is symbolic of a resurrection to new life. Water is also symbolic of birth, since, just as we are physically born when we come out of the water of the womb, we are "born again" or experience a spiritual rebirth when we come out of the waters of baptism. Water is also symbolic of cleansing. Just as regular water cleanses dirt from our bodies, the water of baptism -- water imbued with grace -- cleanses us of spiritual filth and sin. Finally, water itself is often a symbol of the Holy Spirit since it is the Spirit that causes the various effects of baptism that are symbolized by the water.
