Probably due to the sheer size of the wave. Some can be over 100 feet high, containing millions of gallons of water. Also - the speed the wave travels over the surface of the earth - often hundreds of miles per hour. There's very little anyone can do in the path of a tsunami - other than get to high ground as quickly as possible.
