Marriage is the socially acceptable construct in which to raise a family. The laws have been created to protect the relationship and property. This means that widows and children are cared for without becoming a burden on society. Much of the current controversy regarding gay marriage is a desire for the legal rights and protections provided by marriage.

Women : The ones without financial security get married to get financial security. The ones with financial security get married for "acceptance" in society to avoid questions like : "why are you 40 and single", "why dont you have kids", "you dont get along with anyone" - This is subjective and women with financial security can chose to remain single and pursue their careers. Some women also think they are climbing corporate ladder because they are hot, smart and single. As they age, they lose this "attractive girl" edge and hence want to settle with a richer guy.

Men : Men without financial security try to get married to a girl who makes money or has a rich family.

Men (and women ) with financial security also get married for following reasons : 1. Love ( which is nothing but dopamine acting on brains) 2. Avoid Loneliness (they hate coming home into an empty house ) 3. Need for belongingness and need to have a family (there is someone I am responsible for and there is someone who cares for me )

(From a guy's perspective)

Pros : 1. Satisfaction of need for love and belongingness (avoidance of loneliness) 2. Sex

Cons: 1. Provide for food, utilities, amenities for the girl 2. Provide for kids' education, amenities and utilities (1+2 can be upwards of 2-3 million dollars in a big city ) 3. Lose independence and peace of mind ("do i look fat" and "why didnt you call me for two hours - where were you " questions ) 4. Risk of divorce and losing half your savings in alimony 5. Risk of dopamine receptors not working and hence "falling out of love" 6. Risk of girl becoming really fat and unattractive (lose #2 in Pros above in few years)

(From a girl's perspective)

Pros : 1. Financial security (most girls want rich, good looking, nice guys ) 2. Father for kids (Good looking father = high chances of good looking kids) 3. Someone who will pamper you ( and hence need for nice guy ) 4. Something to talk about in friend circle

Cons : 1. If he is alcoholic or becomes one, or becomes an "a$$hole" then risk of bad father and bad husband.

More importantly Tax Break - married people pay less taxes then single people.

Some people get married for SEX or because they had a child by that person, I for one married my husband for LOVE and not for sex, as you may know sex is apart of marriage. You can have a relationship with anyone, but when you get married that carries a special bond, you forsake all others and you be there for them through the good and the bad, you will know if that person is for you, IF YOU GO TROUGH THE BAD AND THEY ARE STILL THERE YOU GOT A KEEPER, BUT IF YOU MARRY SOMEONE AND THEY LEAVE YOU WHEN EVERYTHING GOES WRONG YOU NEED TO RUN FOR THE HILLS, BECAUSE THIS PERSON IS NOT SOMEONE YOU CAN TRUST
