Why do people in England learn French?

People in England may learn French, as one of the languages in their family background. They may learn French, because of England and France being neighbors across the English Channel from each other. They may learn French, for a career in dance or diplomacy. They may learn French, in preparation for teaching. French is a major research language tool worldwide, currently and historically. In fact, it was the language of the monarchy for a couple of centuries after the island's conquest by the subsequent King William I [c. 1027 or 1028 - September 9, 1087]. And they may learn French, to travel in French speaking areas and countries.
