They don't. Wear shoes, you will run faster!
Some athletes train and learn how to run barefoot out of poverty. They can run fast because of the ability they have learned in the absence of shoes. It certainly is a more natural way for the human body to function. Human being survived for thousands of years without shoes. Shoes are a man made improvement. They generally improve traction and absorb the pounding that comes from running.

People swim in bare feet because it creates less drag while in the water. The less drag there is the faster you go. * You do mean most people, do you not? Saying "people" alone makes people think it's "all people" or something. Well, I happen to disagree. I always wear something called swim shoes, or water shoes, and I feel I swim faster wearing those than I would if I were in bare feet. Bare feet feel funny kicking against the water. Is there anyone with a different assumption?

It is comfortable. Plus it makes it easier to relax.

There are several reasons why yoga really needs to be done in bare feet. The most practical consideration is that in many poses you have to bend and flex the arch of your foot and curl and spread your toes. Shoes and even socks would get in the way of doing these things, just as having mittens on your hands would if you try to spread your fingers.

On a deeper level, in yoga we try to put aside attachments to things that are not essential, so removing our footwear at the start of practice is a way to remind us of this. Finally, the mats we practice on represent our little piece of the earth, and having bare feet enables us to keep our skins, our bodies grounded to the earth.

Where did the saying 'no shirt no shoes no service' derive from and why were shoes included instead of pants?

Because, believe it or not, there was a time when people would run around without pants on. But the signs actually came up around beaches where swimmers would walk in with just swim trunks on. And interestingly enough, there is no real health reasons for the bare feet issue. Rather, there is a safety issue with bare feet, such as broken glass. If stepped on, feet could get injured. Also if people are really fat there is kind of a disgusting feature to eating dinner when a fat man/woman is eating right next to you without a shirt on.
