People have been saying things like this, about all sorts of things, for years. Every time we learn to do something new, it's 'playing God'. I know someone who said it about Daylight Saving. Somebody probably said it the first time we planted a seed instead of waiting for the thing to grow by itself. If God put us here, He/She/It gave us brains and hands to use. If we got here by accident, we had better do something before an accident happens to us, like it did the dinosaurs.
On the positive side of this 'playing God' business, I believe that, at its heart it is an expression of fear about the implications of what we are doing. That fear, quietly, intelligently but strongly represented to those with the power to do something, would do more for their cause. The scientists involved are just as likely to take 'playing God' as a compliment, as they are to dismiss the protest altogether; the one thing they are very unlikely to do is halt their research because the putative blasphemy of it has been drawn to their attention.
