Many people have moved away from the ritualistic practice of their religion because there are many religious leaders who preach one set of things and practice a number of others. There are a number today hiding behind the mask of religion, while they deceitfully engage in exploiting and extorting financial bounties from adherants. The problem with the practice of religion today is that too many people are competing with each other to become gods on earth. Some people are competing for the position of God's chosen apostle. Some people are aggressively competing for administrative authority within the congregation. Some are competing for financial rewards and influential benefits for themselves, their friends and family members. People are moving away because globalization has challenged religion to be more relevant to diversity. It has challenged religious doctrines with respect to the validity of the information purported to be supreme and absolute truth. It has also challenged religion to demonstrate respect and tolerance of alternative perspectives. It is also challenging the right of some religious fanatics in determining the legislative agenda of a Government. Absolutely no individual involved in organized religion has a conclusive answer to the question of proving the existence of God. Many will venture to market their particular brand of theology in an attempt to create a convincing argument that their dogma contains the only credible proof that God is true.
Every religion has their own way of practicing it. One way they practice their religion is by reading their religious book, or going to their sacred place for example: church, mosque, synagogue.

people choose not to go to church sometimes because of other priorities. These may include: Jobs, family, Vacations, and disliking those who worship. Not going to church is not a bad thing.... many who do not go to church think that those who do.... hate them. This is not the case. Those who go to church should love and respect others. But if you feel like you want to go to church, you should go. The church members will welcome you with open arms, and you will make friends beyond belief. :)

There are many reasons people claim to "belong" to a religion. Some that I can think of are; 1. Because they want to have something that will always be a part of them, 2. Because they need a foundation for their lives, or 3. Because they want to be a part of something that is bigger than themselves. Although there are many other reasons, these are the ones that come to mind.

Now religion is essentially a set of beliefs; practiced to meet a desired end "The means to an end." Most people practice a religion to achieve some sort of goal, such as heaven or nirvana. However you look at it, any straying from these beliefs or practices is not supportive of the original means and is therefore destructive to the acquiring of the end. Now the reasons why someone would not practice their religion could be because they believe that the means do not justify the end. "Killing this person is worth not going to heaven." But in so doing they would not be practicing their religion and therefore claiming to have something that they do not possess.

Many people just have trouble accepting faith or a higher power. For some, a psychological trouble or past event has caused that person to be fearful of a 'god'.
People who do not follow god are either following a different deity or do not believe in one. They see The Bible as having been written by a human, therefore it is not evidence of God. The world itself cannot be proven to them as evidence of God, because there is no way to track its creation back to Him. People either believe or not, it either "clicks" that he exists or it "clicks" that he does not. Argument over it is futile in the most profound sense.

With questions like this it is useful never to lose sight of one thing. Faith is given to individuals as a gift, and the control, ALL of it, is in the hands of the deity. A person who lives and dies without faith was not given faith as a gift, and the person is not to blame even for the rejection of the gift. This is so because the accepting of the gift cannot be attributed to the person's power or will either, or faith and salvation come through works. If the world is unfolding as the deity wishes, then fretting over the question is arrogant. If the world is not unfolding as the deity wishes, then there are theological problems far worse than people not following the deity as you believe they should.

Someone has said, "Eternal torment awaits anyone who questions God's infinite love". And this is, indeed, what is taught in the Bible. Why would anyone want to follow such a being as that ?

i cant answer the whole question for you. i will tell you my experience which might help. i didn't have a religion until i was 16 because my mother and her BF didn't go to church and didn't practice anything. i did go to church with my grandmother on Sundays but Mommy came first i guess. my mother passed away when i was 15 and her BF is out of the picture. Now i go to a Christian church with an uncle. also after that i wanted to become a preacher and I'm in college majoring in communications/ public speaking to do so. i then found out i have 3 preachers in my family and one is on TBN (the christian network)! my life just fit together i guess.

i guess it all depends where you live too. there is more pressure against people who don't have a religion in the south then there is in the north (USA).

i even have another uncle who used to follow a religion but now hates God because of his divorce and his money crisis and my mom's death and i could go on. so people get confused and lose hope and faith.

I hope this helps.

From my point of view its because they do it because they think they go to heaven if they call themselves a Christian or whatever. But this is not how it works. Just because someone sits in a garage and hangs out in a garage does not make them a car and its the same for religion. If you want more info from a Christian point of view visit: www.crclondon.com

The major issue here is that "following the religion" is not an objective standard. Reasonable people disagree about what the proper way is to follow a religion. More conservative religious people see more liberal religious people as improperly following the religion and vice versa. So, naturally, each will see the other as not following the religion.
