Firewalls perform an important function on networks. A good firewall will inspect internet traffic, following rules for what traffic is allowed and what is not.

For example, a firewall may be set up to not allow file sharing traffic from the network out to the internet. Additionally, it may not allow ANY traffic from the internet to come back into the network unless it was specifically requested.

A computer that is exposed to "raw" internet without any kind of firewall is a much greater target for DOS (Denial of Service) attacks, vulnerability hacks, viruses, etc.
