they are a mix of bulldogs and the bull terrier, PIT just came out of the blue!

Answer

The history of the pit bull has been highly debated. The name was said to come from the history, so this is worth knowing first.

Some people will tell you they got that when bulls had to go to the slaughterhouse, and they were almost herding dogs. If a bull got out of line, they would hold on so that it couldn't escaped and would cower into the herd. That explains the 'bull' part, but 'bull' is also used in bulldog and bull terrier, so that may also mean the previous answer was right.

But this is a debated topic, considering some people said that they came from fighters and where bred for fighters, while others say they all along they were bred companions. So, in fact, not all of this may actually be correct.

Then people say that they were used in ships to catch rats (pit bull terrier) and go into pits or cages to catch a certain amount of contained rats. People might bet on how many the dog caught or how long killing them would take. But, these were said to be done at separate times. So, that is the 'pit' sorted. But, remember, this is a highly debated topic, and some folk will tell you they were never used for any of this, and fighting was all they did. But it would make sence that this history explained the name.

The dog was bred first to bait bulls and bears. When bear-baiting and bull-baiting were deemed inhumane, rat-baiting and dog fighting became more popular. The APBT Breed was used in both sports, and its prevalence in being put in pits with rats, or other dogs led to "pit" being added to its name.

They have "pit" in their name because modern day American Pit Bull Terriers were bred for bear baiting, and later used for dog fighting and rat baiting, all of which take place in a pit.
