Presidential press conferences are held in part to encourage and maintain good relations with the press and its readers as well as to explain the president's programs and plans for new programs. Ideally, the press will ask the questions
that the people are asking and so give the president the chance to explain away any objections to his actions and initiatives. If he appears in the news frequently, people tend to think he is doing something and if he can defend his ideas successfully against hostile questioning, even his opponents will tend to give his ideas more respect.

He has given 43 press conferences of various degrees, six of which were solo White House sessions. During the same period, Mr. Bush gave 24 press conferences, of which four were formal, solo White House sessions. "
