Prince Prospero protects his friends from the Red Death by inviting them to take shelter with him in his fortified abbey, away from the rest of the kingdom. Inside the abbey, he throws a lavish masquerade ball to distract them from the suffering outside and isolates them from the plague that ravages the land.
Prince Prospero welds the doors shut to protect his people (the 1000 knights and ladies) from the epidemic of the Red Death that is spreading through his land and killing all his subjects.

Prince Prospero hides in his palace so he can escape the Red Death. In the story, the Read Death is a plague which the Prince and his guests are trying to avoid catching.

Prince Prospero gathers a thousand of his wealthy friends and locks them in his abbey to protect them from the disease ravaging the country. He hosts extravagant parties within the abbey, believing that they are safe from the outside world.
