Good question. Other systems, parliamentary systems for example, have many more political party opportunities than simply two. Of course Americans are not mandated to have two political parties and there are other 'third' parties. Like the Green Party and the Libertarian Party.

Americans either, just like it that way and are loathe to change, or really don't pay a lot of attention to politics in general.
