Best Answer

Because they weight of the water they displace is more than they weigh themselves. in another way: for something to float the density of the object has to be lesser than the density of the liquid it's submerged into. And although ships are heavy they aren't as heavy as a lump of water shaped just like the ship would be.

Ships float in deep water due to buoyancy, which is the ability of an object to float in a fluid. The weight of the ship is supported by the water it displaces, thanks to the principle of buoyant force. As long as the weight of the ship is less than the weight of the water it displaces, the ship will float.

It depends on the weight, shape and size of the ship.

Will ships float or sink in fresh water?

Ships will float in fresh water as long as their density is lower than that of the water they displace. This is due to Archimedes' principle, which states that the buoyant force acting on an object in a fluid is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.

Why do boats float and ships sink?
