It is called a Menorah. It has seven candles because that was the number of oil lamps on the menorah in the Holy Temple (Exodus ch.25).

The Hanukkah-menorah has eight candles because that was the number of days of the miracle with the oil.

They are both called a menorah (candelabrum). A seven-branched one is modeled after the Menorah in the Holy Temple (Exodus ch.25). The eight-branched menorahs are to commemorate the eight days of the miracle with the oil (which is celebrated in the eight days of Hanukkah). Talmud, Shabbat 21b.

Trick question. The 7-branched candle holder is called a Menorah and was lit in the Jewish Temple (Exodus ch.25).

The 9-branched candle holder is called a Hanukkah-menorah or Chanukiah, and it is only used on Hanukkah.

They don't. If it has seven places for candles, it's not intended for Hanukkah. Nonetheless, it may be used on the first seven nights of Hanukkah.

That candle holder is referred to as a "Hanukkah-menorah", or Hannukiyah. The original Menorah was the holder of the oil lights in the Tabernacle in the Wilderness, and had seven branches. The holder for the Chanukah lights ... whether candles or oil ... has places for eight lights, plus an elevated holder for one more that's used to light the other eight.
