There are many reasons, that vary from cow to cow. It may not have received enough nutrients while in the womb, the mother may have sustained a blow to her belly while pregnant, it may have had a twisted or disfigured umbilical cord, another words it may have had an umbilical cord that became pinched off cutting off its blood flow and nutrient flow . Or it could have been possibly choked by the umbilical cord, among other reasons. It may have also been that it was not developing properly and the mothers body rejected it.

Even stress from the delivery or prolonged delivery has the potential to cause death to the calf before its born.
