They wear thin bands like Nike bands or Under Armour bands to look good as they play or preventing injuries around the tendons of the elbow The real reason for the bands just above the elbow is During stressful repetitive activities, the tendons of the elbow slowly and painfully begin to pull away from the bone of the elbow. This is where the pain in your elbow originates. With continued repetitive use of the elbow, the tendon-bone connection continues to weaken and the pain in your elbow steadily increases. By placing continual pressure on the tendons connecting the Flexor and the Extensors muscles to the Medial and Lateral Epicondyles, thus significantly reducing the tension at the point of connection to the bone. With the bands it reduces the daily exacerbation of the Tendinitis, therefore facilitating the healing process by reducing continual stress to football players elbows. Its more of a style than anything else. Some are actually magnetic bands to help the joints.

Some believe that the elbow straps are purely cosmetic and have no true purpose, but it is hard to believe that the NFL would allow its players to wear any on field equipment with no purpose. I lean towards the believe that the straps help with tendinitis of the elbow.

The player's appearance is more intimidating, at least in the mind of the player himself, which, in turn, makes him feel more confident. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. You sweat to much for them to be effective. Look good, feel good, play good. Defensive Backs, Wide Receivers, and Running Backs generally put the most stock in their flair. I was an Offensive Lineman so if I wore flair it was usually over the top and in practice as a joke.

The only real cure for tennis elbow is to amputate your arm.. just kidding, The best way to help tennis elbow is to give it rest, apply pressure (possibly look into buying one of those bubble bands), and ice if it is in pain. However, if you refuse to mend your elbow, you may have no other choice than surgery.
