By sooty I have to assume you mean black.
That condition is an indication of the incomplete combustion of some Hydrocarbon [fuel or crankcase oil] which did not fully burn in the cylinder (s).
There could be many causes for this, only a couple of which come to mind at the moment:
Black soot isn't a good sign, one of ur plugs or plug wires must have burnt up. and should be replaced.
Spark plugs do not loose power, rather, they become worn and erroded. On occasion they may also become fouled, indicating a mechanical or fuel problem.
when do you change spark plugs
the transmition ,is probably not adjusted to the spark plugs,or their not the right spark plugs
Take old spark plugs out put new spark plugs in

4.7L has 8 spark plugs. 5.7L has 16 spark plugs.
It doesn't carry spark plugs but it has 6 spark plugs installed in the engine. The only internal combustion engine that does not have spark plugs is a diesel.
if it is a v8 it has 8 spark plugs if its a v6 it has 6 spark plugs and ect
Remove old spark plugs. Insert new spark plugs..... Simples
ALL gasoline engines have spark plugs. Only diesels don't have spark plugs.
It has spark plugs. They are just hidden from view.
