Best Answer

They don't.

It's just an atmospheric effect that causes the stars light to fluctuate and thus make them appear as if they have the "common" star shape. In reality, they are all basically just round.

If you looked at a star from outer space you would see the difference.

How was a morning star used in medieval times?

A morning star is basically a club with spikes. As a club, it could break bones or kill by blunt force, but the spikes added the possibility that it would wound by penetration, and with enough weight behind it, it could penetrate armor. Morning stars were used more by infantry than by knights, as the knights preferred maces, which could not accidentally injure themselves or their horses with spikes.

Why do photos of stars typically show four lines emanating from the stars at right angles to each other?

Those lines are called 'diffraction spikes', and are artifacts of the imaging system. If you search for that term you'll find plenty of detailed explanations out on the internet.
