You will need two tin cans and some string. Punch a small hole in the center bottom of each can, and run the string through each hole and tie a know on each end. Position the two cans so that the string between them it taught ... the voice will resonate inside the can and transmit that across the taught string and into the other can. One talks into the can and the listener puts the other can up to their ear.
If someone were to touch the string part way along, their finger would dampen the waves travelling along the string.

∙ 12y agoWell when u speak into the cup, you vibrate it with sound waves from Ur mouth. It gets carried through the string to the other can and duplicates your original vibrations. Hope that helps, is this for mod tech class?

∙ 11y agoThis question is very simple to answer. over centuries people have questioned this so called telephone.I however have an answer. Some people believe that the vibrations carried down the string actually allow the string to carry sound. However this is not entirely true. The actually vibrations are so minute that if they did indeed carry enough vibrations all you would hear would be a jumble of sounds.However the reason people do believe this mechanism works is because as you talk into the can it sounds as if it is being amplified. This is not true because as we know thanks to many scientific laws it is impossible to increase the volume of sound without an electronic device. The hollow sound heard when talking into a can is in fact just the air being pushed in steams in and out of the can. So in conclusion the answer is a no.

The can at one end vibrates under the effect of the sound leaving your mouth and transfers some of that vibrational energy to the string which in turn transfers some to the can at the other end, which vibrates some of the air molecules and finally they vibrate your eardrum.
