Food is a primary reason seals are harvested. The Inuit waste nothing utilizing the fur, meat, bones etc. The seal was a primary source of protein and easily caught.

The fur was used for clothing and shelter. Trade was another reason to catch seal. European traders would provide many items unavailable otherwise in exchange for seal fur.
