Why do watch companies project the time 10 past 10 in their advertisements?

That's because it looks the best when the hands are separated. Other companies use 20 past 8 for the same reason. 5 past 11 the hands are too close and quarter past 3 too far apart. It's all about marketing - looking pleasing to the eye to sell.
