During Roman times the ruler of Rome had an annual celebration in which all the soldiers picked a woman of their choosing and had to spend the next 12 months with her until the next celebration, but lots of soldiers fell in love and married the woman they chose and many of them would not return to battle. The ruler of Rome then ordered all churches not to wed any Roman soldiers, but one church refused. In doing so the priests were all arrested. One of these priests was in love with the jailers daughter and he tried to smuggle a letter to her, when the jailer heard of this he ordered his me to go to his cell and bludgeon him to death. This happened on February 14th. The priests name was Valentine, and at the end of the letter that he wrote to the woman he loved he signed it "From your valentine". So that's why it is celebrated.
