The purpose of apartheid was separation of the races: not only of whites from nonwhites, but also of nonwhites from each other, and, among the Africans (called Bantu in South Africa), of one group from another.

Apartheid is meant to elevate one "race" over another by giving it special privileges, better education, and better housing.

This is a unfair and immoral kind of thing for a society to pick up on. Especially since the idea of "race' is flawed, as all humans of all "races" are proven to be the same genetically, so there is no real difference, besides a persons personal life experiences.

It had the aim to relocate peoples displaced by the British for the purpose of mining to their land of "origin" (homelands). It was unpractical and failed.
