Moving parts in an engine are generally metal on metal and in a car engine everything fits very snugly to eliminate knocking and engine rattle, but this causes extreme friction between the metal surfaces.
if you were to run your car without oil, much of the power would be lost to friction and eventually the metals will melt and fuse due to the intense heat and friction. oil serves and a lubricating coat covering most moving engine parts (where metal on metal friction is concerned) so that the metal only has the friction of the oil to cope with, which is negligible.
Overall it ruduces running heat, engine wear and increases efficiency, engine life and performance.

∙ 9y agoMotors and engines use oil and grease to keep the parts lubricated. If oil was not used in the motor it would get too hot and burn up. Grease is used to keep the parts from breaking and for lubrication to control heat within a part.

Lubricants decrease wear and friction, assist in cooling, and can contain detergent, dispersant, anti-wear & oxidant additive packages also. Grease on the other hand is often used on chassis components and external gears. Greases are particularly useful on sliding and grinding surfaces.

Another reason to oil machine parts is to prevent rusting. IF a machine part is rubbing another so one has bare metal - it will rust quite quickly - so in addition to reducing friction and heat build up it prevents rust
