Earthworms live in the ground because it provides them with: 1) Moisture, to stop them drying out and dying 2) Food, which they obtain by eating the soil and digesting the organic material 3) Protection against predators e.g birds 4) there are tiny holes so they can breath and get a bit of sunshine.
Worms live underground because they are adapted to that particular niche; they find food, moisture, and protection from predators underground. On the surface, they can too easily be found and eaten by birds. They would also get stepped on and suffer more accidental injuries.
