Some sleep studies have suggested that we all dream but that we may not remember the dream in the morning. Dreaming occurs in the portion of sleep called the R.E.M. (rapid eye movement). This occurs every time we sleep soundly.

Other substances, including alcohol, end to induce very sound sleep so that the dreamer does not remember any dreams upon waking. Extreme fatigue can do the same. At other times, dreams are simply random and meaningless, so they leave no lasting impressions.
