My view is that nightmares are meant to help you in terms of dealing with the terror in yourself so you can become clear. It's one thing to say "I had a nightmare and I was upset by it." and "Thank god it was only a dream!". It's another thing to say "Okay, I had this nightmare and I've been chased by a man in a dark mask with a chainsaw.", to be able to turn around and say "Who is this man?", to look back in your life and say, "Who is this man? Is this a man that I know? Is this a man I don't know? Who is it?", so that you can stop running from them. That's the purpose of nightmares, in order to use them as intuitive prompts so that you're not running away from yourself all the time and living a life that's driven by fear.....

There are a number of different causes for dreams, but at the most basic level, dreams are generated by the subconscious mind. Recent sleep research and studies of dreaming suggest that while the conscious (waking) mind rests, the subconscious sifts through the thoughts, impressions and experiences of the day, sorting some for long-term memory and discarding others. In conjunction with this "housekeeping" process, psychologists dating back to Freud and Jung have observed that some dreams relate to the dreamer's urges, desires and fears. Ironically, these dreams can be very difficult to remember, while also communicating with the conscious mind through symbols and metaphors. Nightmares represent fears and stress. Yet very recent research suggests that even the most frightening dreams serve a useful purpose, preparing the mind for problems that could arise in real life. Please see the attached links below for further information on dreams.

Dreams are a function of the subconscious.

Symbols have different meanings to different social groups. It therefore depends on the group to which you belong what those symbols mean.

For someone that has no knowledge of the group to which a person belongs and to claim to be able to interpret those symbols is nonsense.

Dreams mostly mean nothing and are a function of the subconscious mind. We know little of the conscious mind. Those people that claim to be able to interpret the subconscious are charlatans, playing upon the insecurities of people in need real support. Either for financial gain or kudos.
