Everyone has a sty-causing bacteria on our skin, so we all have the potential to develop styes. Usually the bacteria grow in the root (follicle) of an eyelash or infect tiny oil glands inside the eyelid. With poor hygiene and frequent rubbing of eyes, a sty is more likely to develop and can recur. So keep your eyes and hands clean, do not share washcloths or towels with others and avoid rubbing of eyes.
