In many states wearing blaze orange with a certain amount of square inches on front and back is a state regulation - for big game rifle season.
Because it's possible that they could mistake you for another military or something. I am not 100% sure on that it's just what I've heard from multiple people.
Actually it is required by law most places. The reason for bright orange is so that other hunters will be able to see you easily and not mistake you for an animal. Some careless hunters will shoot at a moving bush and if you are behind that bush in camo or even bland colors you could be shot. Bright orange has resulted in a significant decrease in hunters being killed by other hunters.

From Wyoming, in order to meet the legal requirement of blaze orange, the color must be designated as such by the manufacturer. Most states have defined "daylight fluorescent orange" as the necessary color. I wonder how a DOW officer would check it in the field..... if they do, they are probably looking for something else.

When the deer firearms season begin, all hunters must wear 'Blaze or Hunter Orange' no matter what they are hunting. To meet the requirements a hunter must have exposed at all times at least 1 of the following: hat, jacket, gloves or vest. Camouflage orange does not satisfy this requirement. Rabbit and squirrel hunters must wear the required garments throughout the remainder of the season. Archery deer hunters may wear regular camouflage after all deer firearms seasons close. Grouse, pheasant and quail hunters must always wear orange. Goose and duck hunters are not required to wear orange. This law was in effect for 2009, so check again in 2010. Turkey, fox, coyote, raccoon,and o'ppossum hunters are not required to wear orange.
