It's purely a matter of taste and or opinion. When a drum is muted is eliminates or controls the amount or presence of overtones increasing the attack and decreasing tone and timbre.

Pr-muffled heads are available to enhance certain positive sounds of the head and drum. (in example, heads that enhance the lows and attack)

A lot of drummers find that using the correct head combination and properly tuning each drum is better than applying muffling.
