The only example I can think of is the War of 1812, when the United States and Great Britain went to war for the second time, as the US wanted to take Canada. Early in the war, Britain was on the defense, but as time progressed, they decided to just try to take the colonies back as well, as they had lost the colonies in 1783 due to the American Revolution. However, both sides proved unsuccessful and there was no victor to the war.
