He threw rocks at them and called them names. Sometimes he wore the ring so they could see him, other times they could see him. His insults drew them away from the dwarves and he doubled back and rescued them.

Bilbo sings to the Spiders to taunt them. He is invisible because he has the ring on. He is trying to get the spiders to follow his voice far away from the dwarfs so he can sneak back and cut them loose from their bindings.
