Yes, it can cause hair loss. My hair is falling out from the root, that is I can see the root part of the hair when it falls out. I had two Brazilian keratin treatments, both this year. I did not notice the hair loss until September, which was five months after the second treatment. If I even touch off my hair with my hand, I will have about 8 or 10 hair falling out. Not good. Lots of hair loss after washing and combing too. Your hair looks great at first when you get this treatment done, but I definitely do not recommend it for fine hair, like mine.

This is more a problem of your stylist than the treaments themselves.
Why? Well when you use a Keratin treatment it really is important to respect the timings, and many stylists simply aren't familiar enough with these products.
I live in Brazil, where the Keratin treatment is known as Escova Progressiva. Hair fall-out is unheard when using these products, and I suspect it's because the people working with them have been doing so for a very long time.
The use of Formaldehyde is also banned in these products which may have something to do with it (as I've heard that American made products aren't regulated in the same way)
But, the bottom line is that these treatments are very powerful and you have to respect the instructions. So while it may be tempting to think you'll get better results by leaving the product on your hair longer, the exact opposite is often true, and you'll be harming hair with each minute over the suggested waiting period.
