Because. Bruno has a friend on the other side of the fence, Shmuel yes? Well he accidentally blurts out to Gretel that Shmuel will be waiting for him and she bugs him about it and his excuse is that he is an imaginary friend because if his family found out, not only would Bruno be a disgrace to the family, but if Hitler found out then the whole family would be a disgrace to the Nazi Party and they would probably punish the family.
