Edward Cullen had bitten Isabella Marie Swan in the first book because James, one of the American nomad vampires had bitten her. He didn't want her to turn into a vampire, because he didn't want her to change, going through the physical pain that he had to go through when he had been turned into a vampire and the pain of being a vegetarian vampire, dealing with the feeling of thirst while resisting the full temptation. Edward had also bitten Bella in the fourth book, Breaking Dawn because she had gotten pregnant after the wedding and honeymoon and it was a half vampire, meaning that it could have been venomous but wasn't, mysteriously all female half beings aren't venomous. Bella's baby, Renesmee had bitten her way though Bella's stomach with the help of Edward to get her out, and Bella had lost a lot of blood, he not only bit her but also stabbed a needle into her heart full of his venom. He bit her several times to ensure a full and hopefully a quicker transformation into vampirism.
Their daughter Renesmee, who is part vampire, is literally ripping her way out of Bella's body, killing Bella. She will either die or need to be changed into a vampire. After the baby has been removed Edward injects his venom into Bella's heart, by syringe, to save her life. Edward continues little bites along all the areas where Bella is ripped open, sealing them closed with more of his venom.
He and Carlisle used Morphine to reduce the pain of the transformation, yet Bella is still in excruciating pain. She decides not to tell them about the morphine not working, knowing that Edward would be upset to know she had still been in pain.
