A Rochester castle has one round tower because when John 1st tried to capture it from the rebel barons he built a mine and destroyed one of the towers in order to get it back. He did get it back in the end and by this time engineers had realized that round towers had more strength then square ones because an old medieval tactic was to dig out the four corners of a square tower and it would collapse but with a circular tower there where no corners to dig out.

What were the castle parts in the Middle Ages?

A medieval castle was very complex with many parts. There was a dungeon (dark cell underground), donjon (tower), gatehouse (main entrance with a guard), and a hoarding (gallery with floor slats to drop objects).

What were the disadvantages to round keep castles?

The disadvantages of round keep castles: 1) First of all, they stuck out like a sore thumb! Here you have a fortress made with all those nice looking square walls and gates and then there in the middle is a silly round tower. They looked really dumb and so no one respected them. They also insulted everyone's architectural sensibilities and the resulting anger made them the first place to be attacked. "Tear down the goofy tower" was the battle cry so often heard. 2) They were not easy to defend! When under attack, the lord of the keep would yell. "Everybody to the north wall!" Of course since the whole tower was round (and thus only encircling one wall) the defenders were completely confused about where to go. 3) Last of all was the biggest disadvantage of a round keep. The kings in those days were generally obese blockheads and thus couldn't get into their own tower. The old saying, "you can't fit a square pig into a round hole" comes from this situation.

What is a scaling tower?

Quite simply, the tower is rolled up to the enemy wall, whereupon attacking soldiers climb it from the inside and pour over the wall. It was a much safer way of breaching a wall than with scaling ladders, as the scaling tower was heavily protected from arrows, javelins, and other missiles hurled at them by the defenders, and soldiers on top of the tower provided covering fire for those climbing onto the enemy wall. Yet, it took time to get the tower into position, which made no secret to the defenders of where the breach was intended. For this reason, several towers were used at the same time whenever possible, and they were very effective.

What happened in the Tower of London with Mary queen of Scots?

Not what you think, while executions were held at the Tower of London, Mary Queen of Scots was executed in the now defunct Fotheringay ( sometimes spelled Fotheringhay) Castle in Scotland. There were, of course political executions in the Tower of London, but this was not one of them. I believe Anne Boleyn ( mother of Elizabeth I) was executed by Axe in the Tower ( actually a prison complex) . There was a rather morbid Cockney folk song about this. now we do not have a similar ballad about Jayne Mansfield, but that was an accident.

What was a round tower used for?

Round towers defended the castle against a cannon better than a wall with a corner. On a castle, a corner was a sort of weak point. Get it... Corner, point. Anyway, if a cannon hit a corner then two walls would collapse. And with a round tower, one wall would collapse. So not as much damage would be made. Also, most of the time there would be another round wall inside the tower so that if the cannon breaks through one wall it would have to go through another.

What were stone keeps?

A Round Keep was one of the strongest castle designs. A round tower would not have any sharp corners that prevented the view of the archers. It would provide a broad view for the soldiers. There would also not be any weak corners that the enemy could tunnel under and collapse a wall. Also, a Round Tower would allow enemy missiles to bounce and slide off the smooth walls.
