Catholic AnswerWe have The Bible because God in His great Love for us, has caused these books to be recorded for us. They contain the Word of God in God's Own Words which is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, is set forth and displays its power in a most wonderful way in the writings of the New Testament which hand on the ultimate truth of God's Revelation. We have the Bible today because the Catholic Church has zealously guarded this Deposit of Faith, she has religiously copied it through the centuries, preaching it constantly to the Faithful, and keeping It from all error from very early in the Church until the present day.

The Torah is the first five books of the Hebrew Bible -- what Christians call the "Old Testament". Traditionally, it was given to Moses by God with the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai.

No one is sure when the Torah was first written down, but there is a tradition that it was transmitted orally for many generations, like many tales that originated before most people were literate.

Even today, "official" copies of the Torah are hand-copied by trained scribes on a continuous scroll. Since corrections are not permitted, it takes a long time to create an error-free copy of the Hebrew text.

Torah scrolls aren't "magic", but they are a powerful connection with the history of the Jews.

There are a number of reasons for the Bible... each to be revealed in the course of the TIME SCHEDULE of God's plan for His creation.

One reason for the Bible is as a "latter day training manual" for God's saints... those whom He is calling out from among the masses of mankind [sanctifying; setting apart for His Holy purpose] to "learn His Truth" and to be made Perfect in Christ to rule the coming Kingdom of God on earth over the nations with Him.

"All Scripture is... useful to teach us [God's called-out-ones, who BELIEVE IT] what is True ["...Thy Word is Truth..." - John 17:17] and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out [if we comply with it and obey it] and teaches us [in Christ] to do what is right. It is God's way of PREPARING US IN EVERY WAY, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do." (II Tim.3:16-17 NLT New Living Translation)

"To all who are victorious, who obey Me to the very end, I will give Authority over all the nations. They will rule the nations with an iron rod and smash them like clay pots." (Rev.2:26-27 NLT)

The Bible is also a "WITNESS and a WARNING" to all of mankind is these last days of God's plan revealing the final major events coming on the earth just before and after Jesus returns. The "books of the Bible shall be opened" and will be a witness and testimony at the coming "TRIAL" of "Judgment Day" when God shall Judge every man's life's works:

"...the books were opened... And the dead were Judged according to the things written in the books, according to what they had done." (Rev.20:12 NLT)

The Bible contains the "Life-Giving Words" of God for those who "believe" them:

"It is the Spirit that gives Eternal Life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the VERY WORDS I HAVE SPOKEN to you [which are Faithfully recorded in the Bible] ARE SPIRIT AND LIFE." (John 6:63 NLT)

"But all who reject Me and My Message [recorded in the Bible] will be Judged at the Day of Judgment BY THE TRUTH I HAVE SPOKEN [which is recorded in the books of the Bible]." (John 12:48 NLT)

"I don't speak on My own Authority. The Father who sent Me gave Me His own instructions as to what I should say. And I know His instructions lead to Eternal Life; so I say whatever the Father tells Me to say!" (verses 49-50)

That's a couple of reasons for the necessity of the Bible. So that God's special creation, man [created in God's image, to ultimately be born into the Divine Family of Elohim], will have his Creator's plan revealed to those who "believe," now -- and to serve as a case history source, later, when God's Righteous Justice shall be served at the "Last Great Day" of His plan for mankind's Salvation on Judgment Day.

In the beginning... the Word of God was "spoken." Even the "pre-flood" world received the witness, warning and testimony of God that was later "written" down in the Bible for the latter day generations to have... and for some to believe and know.

"...Enoch, who lived seven generations after Adam, prophesied... 'Look, THE LORD IS COMING with thousands of His Holy Ones. HE WILL BRING THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD TO JUDGMENT." (Jude 1:14-15 NLT)

The Bible is necessary, so that the latter day generations of mankind will be without excuse for their life's works at the Last Great Day... as the warned early disobedient generations had no excuse when they suffered the flood of their day.

The Bible warns us about a coming SECOND FLOOD; the next time, not with water... but a "flood of fire":

"...This will be their argument: 'Jesus promised to come back, didn't He? Then where is He? Why, as far back as anyone can remember, everything has remained exactly the same since the world was first created.' They deliberately forget that God made the heavens by the Word of His command, and He brought the earth up from the water and surrounded it with water. THEN He used water to destroy the world with a mighty flood. And God has also commanded that the heavens and the earth WILL BE CONSUMED BY FIRE ON THE DAY OF JUDGMENT, when the ungodly will perish." (II Peter 3:4-7 NLT)

God deems it necessary for mankind to know what He has planned for the removal of sin from the world [the removal of disobedience by mankind to His Commandments: "...for all sin opposes the Law of God." (I John 3:4 NLT)

"Don't be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the Terrible Anger of God comes upon all those who disobey Him." (Eph.5:6 NLT)

That's why the Bible is necessary. It's to train, test and try those whom God is calling to rule the Kingdom of God with Christ... and to WARN THE WISE of God's coming wrath and JUDGMENT against mankind's disobedience to His laws!

"Many will be purified, cleansed, and refined by these trials. But the wicked will continue in their wickedness, and none of them will understand. Only those who are wise ["...the fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom..." - Prov.9:10] will know what it means." (Dan.12:10 NLT)

God's warning to mankind is out. The Day of His Judgment is coming:

"Let the one who is doing wrong continue to do wrong; the one who is vile, continue to be vile; the one who is good, continue to do good; and the one who is holy, continue in holiness. See, I AM COMING SOON, and My Reward is with Me, to REPAY ALL according to their deeds." (Rev.22:11-12 NLT)

The Bible is necessary so that all men will know where they stand with their Creator's Commandments... or know whether they refuse to stand for them.

"Here is my final conclusion: FEAR GODand OBEY HIS COMMANDMENTS, for THIS IS THE DUTY OF EVERY PERSON. GOD WILL JUDGE US FOR EVERYTHING WE DO, including every secret thing, whether good or bad." (Eccle.12:13-14 NLT)
